We’ve Got Each Other and That’s A Lot

Sometimes, all it takes is a smile to help you forget the pain in your feet for a few minutes. Sometimes, all it takes is a hug to remind you that the reason we dance is worth the tiredness in your eyes. For me, all it took was a song.

It is officially 7 a.m., which means that we are past the halfway point of Dance Marathon’s 25th year. One of the most beloved traditions of the Big Event is playing “Livin’ on a Prayer” by Bon Jovi to celebrate the 12 hours that have passed and to anticipate the ones yet to come. Thousands of dancers all sing along, faces blurring together and becoming a collective voice raised in triumph and hope.

It is easy to lose morale and excitement during the long hours of the night, when so many other people are sleeping, but remember why you are here. You have changed lives in ways that you have yet to realize just by being here at the Big Event. Whenever you feel alone during the next 12 hours, try and remember the feeling in your gut as you screamed your heart out to the lyrics, “Take my hand, we’ll make it I swear.” Try and remember how connected you felt in that moment to everyone in that room and the realization that the people beside you are here with the same love in their hearts. Try and remember the kiddos we are doing all of this for.

During the next 12 hours, we will watch as miracles happen and lives are changed forever. Because we’ve got each other, and that is absolutely a lot.
