"Kernels For The Kids: UIDM’s New Community Day at Colony Pumpkin Patch"

NORTH LIBERTY, IA — This September 16 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., the University of Iowa
Dance Marathon is partnering with Colony Pumpkin Patch for a newly established community
day titled, Kernels For The Kids.

This event will commemorate Dance Marathon’s 25th anniversary, as well as mark the opening
of the Colony Pumpkin Patch’s fall season. Colony Pumpkin Patch is located in North Liberty,
IA, and is owned by Dean and Katie Colony.

Shannon Myers, Executive Chair for DM 24, started the groundwork last year when she visited
the Colony Pumpkin Patch with another school organization.

“After meeting with Katie and Dean Colony, we started putting together the idea of creating a
Dance Marathon themed corn maze and event. Since then Lexi Breitbart, the Executive Chair for
Dance Marathon 25, has been working with them to create ‘Kernels for the Kids.’ This event will
bring even more attention to Dance Marathon within the community and support the kids and
families fighting against pediatric cancer, all while having some fun during the fall,” Myers said.

Each year, Colony Pumpkin Patch chooses a theme to cut into their corn maze; during the past
few years, they have featured organizations such as North Liberty Food Pantry and Be The
Match: The National Marrow Donor Program.

“We like to help others in any way we can,” said Katie Colony. This year’s corn maze has been
cut to represent Dance Marathon; and for the community day, posters of families’ cancer
journeys will be featured within the maze.

“[At the event,] our Executive Director will explain the vision for this year, we will have a Dance
Marathon family speaker to share their journey with us, and there will be different activities to
do. It will be a great way for us to connect with the community and explain what drives Dance
Marathon and our mission,” Breitbart said.

Although the community day begins at 10 a.m., the Executive Director’s speech and the family
speaker’s story will start at 11 a.m. The admission price for this event will be 8 dollars for people
three years and up, and all of the proceeds will be donated to Dance Marathon. This admission
covers rides to the pumpkin fields, access to the zip line, and entry into the corn maze.

All press is encouraged to come to the event for more coverage.
