University of Iowa Dance Marathon Pledges $2.2 million to Fund Child Life Specialist Position

IOWA CITY, IA— On November 7, 2018, the University of Iowa Dance Marathon announced a $2.2 million commitment towards an endowment for the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital.

This commitment will fund a Child Life Specialist position on the University of Iowa Dance Marathon Pediatric Cancer Center in the UI Stead Stead Family Children’s Hospital.

“Being a completely student led organization, it is an honor to work with the hospital to decide how we can financially support them. Our recent allocation will allow our organization to making a lasting impact for those treated at the children’s hospital. It is such a privilege to know where the money from our organization goes—it’s extremely unique to our Dance Marathon and allows for projects such as these to be so special,” says Charlie Ellis, Executive Director for Dance Marathon 25.

Not only will this endowment instantly provide a Child Life Specialist on the 11th floor of the Children’s Hospital, but it will also assist in additional funding for other Child Life Specialist positions. Additionally, University of Iowa Dance Marathon members have the opportunity to volunteer on the 11th floor of the hospital.

“This allocation truly will impact the lives of the patients on level 11 much more than I can begin to imagine. It will allow for more play interventions, emotional support, and hope within the Stead Family Children’s Hospital. I am so overwhelmed with excitement and joy as I think about all that is to come,” says Gillian Fiandaca, Hospital Director for Dance Marathon 25.

Alongside this special celebration, we also commenced our annual fundraising push day, Day to Dance Marathon. With a goal to raise $325,000 in 24 hours, this day serves as an opportunity to Do More, Donate Money, and Deliver Miracles. With this recent allocation, we hope our

fundraising efforts within these 24 hours, as well as the rest of the year, are able to financially assist our $2.2 million endowment.

We will be hosting a table at the Hubbard Commons in the Iowa Memorial Memorial today from 8 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. for press to come for more information, interviews, or comments.
