Jaclyn Gessner, a first-year dancer from Story City, Iowa, has been involved with Dance Marathon for 15 years.
Why did you want to get involved in Dance Marathon?
Dance Marathon was a large reason why I chose to attend the University of Iowa. I have been a family in DM since I was three and this organization has meant so much to me and my family. I wanted to help other families who are fighting this battle.
What impact has Dance Marathon made on your life?
DM has seriously been one of the most amazing blessings. Going through treatment, this organization provided so much joy and relief to my family, helping make each day the best it could be for us. Now as a student, DM has become such a passion of mine, providing me purpose in serving the strongest kiddos and families.
What message would you share with current DM dancers?
What you do matters! Choosing to devote your time for these kiddos means the world to these families. Being a part of Dance Marathon isn't easy, it is a lot of work to fundraise, recruit members, and spend countless hours on projects, but it all is so worth it. YOU are making a monumental difference in so many lives.
What message would you share with families and children who benefit from Dance Marathon?
We truly love ALL of our families and want to help in every way we can. We are supporting you through everything, all the good and the bad times. You are never alone through this process, there is a whole organization standing by your side and fighting with you every step of the way. You are so strong!
