What is UIDM?

UI Dance Marathon is the largest student-run organization at the University of Iowa. Founded in 1994, UIDM is an organization that raises money for kids fighting pediatric cancer through Children’s Miracle Network. Students involved in UI Dance Marathon have opportunities to raise money for the supported families, as well as attend monthly events and activities. UI Dance Marathon culminates in February at the annual Big Event. The Big Event is a 24-hour tribute to the kiddos and families battling cancer, both past and present. Dancers have the opportunity to interact with kiddos and participate in engaging activities all night long.

How to Register

Students can register by following this link. You will be required to create an account and enter your contact information. Then, you will be prompted to choose a miracle group. Miracle groups are run by two captains and help to keep things organized in a large organization. The registration fee is $30, which will cover a t-shirt, meals, and snacks at the Big Event in February.

Family Involvement

At the heart of UI Dance Marathon, there are over 1400+ families that are supported. UIDM raises money for cancer treatments, hospital co-pays, meals, and even funeral expenses. There are several opportunities to interact with the kiddos and families of UI Dance Marathon. At monthly dancer meetings, families are guest speakers and get to share their stories. There are also a variety of family events throughout the year. Volunteering at UIDM events is always a great way to meet the families that we support. Dancers also have the opportunity to paint pillowcases, which are displayed in the ballroom at the Big Event and are given to families in support of the kiddos.

Leadership Opportunities

UIDM has a leadership team of over 200 people! Leadership opportunities include everything from being a captain, to working behind the scenes with operations and finances, and even creative opportunities. Applications for the next year’s leadership are sent out after the Big Event in February. For any committees that may need some extra leaders, a secondary application will be sent out in the fall. Stay tuned in order to apply!

Frequently Asked Questions

I hate dancing! Do I have to dance to participate in UI Dance Marathon?

No! Dancing is a very small part of UIDM, and it’s totally optional. We occasionally dance to boost morale, but it’s not required. UI Dance Marathon’s main focus is fundraising for and supporting our families.

How much money am I expected to raise?

For DM33, dancers are expected to raise $400 in order to attend the Big Event in February. There are several opportunities to raise money throughout the year, including canning at sporting events, online resources, and matching days through the organization.

Is UI Dance Marathon only one day per year?

No! Although UI Dance Marathon is known for the 24-hour Big Event, there are several opportunities to get involved throughout the year. Dancer meetings are held on the first Monday and Tuesday of each month to allow flexibility with schedules. There are also various family events and volunteering opportunities that dancers can participate with.

Do I really have to dance for 24 hours?

The Big Event has a large variety of activities and events to keep dancers entertained for 24 hours, not just dancing! Activities can include family speakers, laser tag, silent disco, merch drops, food, and so much more. We hold the Big Event for 24 hours to show solidarity with our kiddos, who endure countless hours of sleepless nights and treatment. Naps can also be earned through additional fundraising or care packages. Accommodations are available throughout the Big Event, such as quiet areas, earplugs, seating, and more.
